Richard Lawson In your face released 2012
“I’ve been listening to “In Your Face”. It’s a great CD, I really dig the sound you’ve got going. It has a real 70’s psychedelic feel about it, with pop/folk sound. Reminds me of the Manchester band “World of Twist”!! Was a big fan in the 90’s, but unfortunately they only released one album. Always thought they had potential!! You should also check out Intastella, Django Django … same vibe bro. Anyway, I really like the rap stomper “eBay”, the 70’s Bowie/Elton John sound of “Magic Eyes”, the “Green Room” for its melody and harmonies, and the beautiful psyched out tune “Call My Name” (which is a perfect ending to the album, and a stand out track for sure!!). ”

“Lawson draws on genres ranging from folk pop to psychedelia to electronica, and the new album [In your Face] bears the influence of contemporary artists such as Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes as well as classic performers including the Beatles, Beach Boys and XTC. …Lawsons work, which varies from mild to wild in its eclectic influences and experimentation. Lawsons new album is slated for an Easter 2012 release in Melbourne. The album is an audacious love affair with psych folk electronica and featues queer but outstanding collaborations with the sublime Caitlin Harnett and the punchy South Coast rapper the Mighty ASH.’

“Normally found behind his keyboards in recent years, Richard Lawson branches out on this CD to become a multi-instrumentalist and singer. The music is something else altogether. Opening track Paradise has a 1980s Human League sound, while elsewhere there’s spoken word and some Beach Boy and Beatles influences, all spun through a synthesizer and given a funky beat. ”

“Shoalhaven Heads musician and former Lime Spiders drummer, Richard Lawson, has taken up electronic music in recent years. Here he travels around world, back in time and out to space for a sound symphony made from a variety of inspirations. Egypt’s voice sampling is most effective and evokes a middle eastern bazaar. Deep bass notes on Segue for a Mars Landing set a sombre and eerie tone. A great album for soundtrack fans. FR”

“I found listening to and losing myself in this album a highly emotive and enriching experience. In response to it, I can’t apologise for describing a sequence of highly personal and subjective images and atmospheres; Figtree Renaissance II engaged me that personally. Period. Its creator, Richard Lawson, has recently been making inroads in the Australian Film Industry in association with Tropfest filmmakers Mat De Koning and Byron Quandary. I look forward to Lawson’s music featuring prominently on our screens big and small, not to mention on our airwaves. Renaissance. Rebirth. , with Figtree Renaissance II Richard Lawson begins anew. As far as beginnings go, it’s a stunner. On the front cover of this album we have one of the most famous ‘beginnings’ of all time, the Birth of Venus. In my opinion, the motif here of young Venus being born fully and perfectly formed fits Lawson’s work pretty darn well. ”
