Culburra Beach Music Festival

I made an appearance at the Culburra Beach Music Festival last Friday 11 May. It was the last gig for the In your Face East Coast tour and definitely the biggest and best. Sandwiched in between the awesome ‘Caravana Sun’ and my mates Ben and Mick with Southerly Change it was a hard spot to fill…but I think it went over well. People really didnt know me from a bar of soap so I pulled out the most eclectic set I could and by this stage of the tour I’d incorporated Live drums into the set with much success…it means running back and forth between the guitar and drums and needing 2 mic stands onstage…but I was able to insert some nice atmospherics in between songs. Pulled out old numbers like Egypt, Purple Patch and Hit it and had a guest djembe player in event organiser Damion Stirling help out there. Sharon Lee Twiss continues to grow as a singer/percussionist onstage with me as well and some of the comments afterwards were highly encouraging.

Im going to retire to my studio to write up new stuff and try to get my life back a bit…its been 2 months on the road and all the while still teaching in Mudgee…lots of kilometres travelled but hey I learnt heaps and played some unreal supports to Genevieve Chadwick / Southerly Change  and Bryan Estepa.

Album, Tour update and May News

Hey Everyone

Just some updates on the current tour and release info for the 2nd Richard Lawson album ’In your Face’

Finally grabbed copies from Printers in Melbourne during gigs down there. A few of you might recognise yourself on the cover. I decided to put all the friends who have helped me get this far in this mad industry. As the title suggests I used their Facebook profiles and some of the songs included like ‘Cleaning out my inbox’ and ‘Ebay’ are pretty in your face and reflect our dominant online culture.

Its available thru Redeye in Sydney and Pure Pop and Greville Records in Melbourne and online at the Richard Lawson Music Store and CD Baby. Itunes are still in the process of putting it up but should be any day now…

Its already been played/featured on ABC Central West, Prime TV and on 3 RRR and Triple U on the South Coast. Going to radio and press for reviews over the next few weeks…so expect a CD some of you!!

The first clip off the album is up on youtube. I’m in the Movies feat. Mighty Ash was shot by Martin Reyerink of MD International Pictures in his film clip debut and he and we were stoked at the outcome. I met him through Facebook [!!] and we both share a common love of all things psychedelic, trashy 60’s culture and movies so it was a marriage made in heaven. It’s got some classic sci fi footage, some romance and a bit of retro advertising from the world expo of 1961 and features stellar performances by the Mighty Ash [my rapping mate from the South Coast who co wrote the song], go go dancing by Collette McGrath and singing and maracas by Sharon Lee Twiss. A very fun experience for all of us and it was all their film debuts as well. Suppose I’m in the Movies is more applicable to them now??

The tour is into its 6th week now and Ive covered a lot of ground. Melbourne was a gas, the Espy Front Bar being a highlight with the full band including Mighty Ash onstage…footage here. The gig at Brackets and Jam on top of Kincumber Mt on the Central Coast in a big Mud Brick hall was one of the gigs of the tour so far and performing with Genevieve Chadwick at her birthday Bash at the Commercial in Milton was a blast. Ive been refining my style and learning a lot as I go, this being the first time Ive really gone out on tour with the laptop, but it’s great knowing I can now finally get out and play and for the content to sound like it should!!!

Still have some dates on the first round to go before a short breather and writing break mid May to mid June before I go out again

Thur 3 May w Southerly Change at Dicey Rileys Wollongong

Sun 6 May Valve Underground Bar and Venue Tempe

Fri 11 May Culburra Beach Festival

Till next time

Cheers

Richard

A musical experiment w Penny Ikinger and Tom Kazas

Heres something Penny Ikinger and myself are cooking up with the sometime help of musical magician Tom Kazas. A soundscape of sorts which we will be performing first up at Brightspace Gallery St Kilda over the June Long Weekend. Made up of musical pastiches from some of my soundtrack work plus a fair bit of noise and improvisation…we utilise everything…even a dash of Daft Punk….Guitars, keyboards, laptops, percussion and voices and it has already spawned a new song with Richard and Penny…Never make you cry…Penny put down the demo vox yesterday

Pictured here are yesterdays rehearsals at Soxy Music St Kilda…..it was very thought provokingImageImage

Won the rehearsal…lost the gig

Its a case of missmatched venues…I shoulda checked on the sound specs for the Lyrebird Lounge before booking it. Dont get me wrong its a fantastic venue for what it is but woeful for what Im trying to do. Terry Serio and Emma Swift sounded great because they went acoustic…me …I stayed biig with the electronic backing and drums and extra guitar.

We couldnt hear the backing properly…Jason our drummer was clueless as to what was going on and more than once we totally fell out of sync. Playing shuffles with brushes just doesnt translate with electronica.

Ive played gigs smaller than this…markets and what not and done them myself and its sounded awesome…but if the gig is too small…drop the drums…theres already drums on the laptop and it just confused the issue.

Rehearsal on the other hand was amazing…pity we couldnt invite the crowd to that. Jason Block is one hell of a drummer and I do like a BIG sound. Jon Schofield bless him and driven down ON THE DAY from just near Gundagai after playing with Terry at the Green Room in Enmore. Terry flew…its ok for some haha. Jon basically had been on the road for 8 hours and then driven straight to the rehearsal room at Soxy Music in St Kilda…legend.

Anyway…Ive learned my lesson….as Genevieve Chadwick had probably learned her lesson…only get your drummer on bigger gigs….

One good thiing…the version of Heroes by David Bowie went off!!!!

Out of hiding….new set

Experimented with new set and backing over the weekend…Mudgee Markets on Sat then Bridge Tavern Nowra on Sunday…extremely pleased with outcome…Ive been working on a whole heap of new songs fro 3 weeks now and squirrelled away in studio putting in some serious hours on cubase and rehearsal…new new originals/Bowie/Beatles/Fleet Foxes covers …and incorporating them with “In your face”  songs to fill up to a 3 hour set…the sound was pristine and it was the first appearance in my home town for almost a year…I feel like ive truly arrived at the sound and content I want…suffice to say I sold a stack of CDs and the new one isnt even out yet…bring on the tour!!!
Heres a bit of a write up by Sam Paine in the local Mudgee Guardian Fri 16 March 2012

“Lawson draws on genres ranging from folk pop to psychedelia to electronica, and the new album [In your Face] bears the influence of contemporary artists such as Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes as well as classic performers including the Beatles, Beach Boys and XTC. …Lawsons work, which varies from mild to wild in its eclectic influences and experimentation. Lawsons new album is slated for an Easter 2012 release in Melbourne. The album is an audacious love affair with psych folk electronica and featues queer but outstanding collaborations with the sublime Caitlin Harnett and the punchy South Coast rapper the Mighty ASH.’
